Gartner defines a digital twin as ‘the virtual representation of a real-world entity or system created to improve enterprise decision-making.’ So key to the organisation of the future, this trend was listed by Gartner in 2017 as well. The IDC also support the importance, having predicted that companies who invest in digital twin technology in the next few years will see a 30 per cent improvement in cycle times of critical processes.
The concept of a digital twin is an exciting prospect for organisations, although not a new one. NASA used the practice of technology pairing during the peak of their space exploration programme, employing the principles to enable the rescue of the failed Apollo 13 mission. NASA continues to use digital twin technology, as it offers a virtual environment in which to test before manufacturing.
